Pilot's Disability Insurance FAQ

Pilots Disability Insurance FAQ

What is pilot's disability insurance?

Pilot's disability insurance provides income protection in terms of a monthly or lump sum benefit in case a professional pilot is temporarily or permanently disabled or has their license suspended due to the loss of their medical certificate.

Who is eligible for pilot disability insurance?

Pilot disability insurance is available to commercial pilots, corporate pilots, cargo pilots, agricultural pilots, firefighter pilots, test pilots and other types of pilots.

Once I submit the application, how long will it take for me to receive pilot disability insurance quotes?

After we receive your completed application, it will take one to two business days for you to receive a proposal. As this insurance is underwritten, there may be new terms presented at the time of application.

Why should I buy pilot disability insurance if my airline already provides me with disability insurance?

You should still consider purchasing this insurance because what you have may not be enough. This insurance is meant to supplement your existing insurance.

What is the benefit period for pilot disability insurance?

The benefit period is the number of months the benefits would be paid during your disability. The lower the benefit period, the lower the premium. The benefit period can vary from 12 months to 60 months. Alternatively, you can choose the lump sum option.

What is the elimination period for pilot disability insurance?

The elimination period is the duration you must wait after the loss of license or injury/sickness before you are eligible to receive benefits. The lower the elimination period, the higher the premium. Elimination periods may vary from 30 days to 365 days.

What benefit amounts can I get in case of a disability?

It depends upon your current income - not more than 65% of the income.

What kinds of payment options are available for pilot disability insurance?

You can pay monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, annually, multi-year prepay or on a single premium basis.

What payment methods can I use?

You can use American Express, MasterCard or Visa. You can also pay via certified funds using a wire transfer.

Once the current insurance expires, can I extend it?

No, but a new term of insurance may be offered, subject to underwriting.

Can I get pilot disability insurance coverage for FAA violations?

No. Pilot's disability or loss of license provides coverage only if you lose your pilot license due to injuries, illnesses or disability. Therefore, other reasons are excluded.

What are some health issues that may cause a pilot to lose their FAA Medical certificate permanently?

Some common reasons are diabetes, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart replacement, cardiac valve replacement, angina (chest pain), psychosis, bipolar disorder, substance dependence or abuse, epilepsy, loss of consciousness (within limits), transient losses of nervous system.

Can I receive pilot disability insurance benefits from multiple sources?

Yes. That is what these insurance plans such as these are designed for. However, please note that there may be limits on what total amount you can collect, based on your income before the disability.
